Kosun Decanter Centrifuge Working Principle

To fully understand Kosun Decanter Centrifuge Working Principle, we first define what is decanter centrifuge. A decanter centrifuge is a device that can create a very fast rotation. A decanter centrifuge is basically used to dilute the fluid that is extracted from the gas or oil mine.

Decanter Centrifuge Working Principle

There are several types of decanter centrifuges currently utilized in the industry, the most common of which are vertical decanter centrifuge, horizontal decanter centrifuge and conveyor decanter centrifuge. The principle behind a decanter centrifuge is based on the theory of gravitational separation. For example, if you fill a glass with a mixture of mud and water, over time the weight of the mud will cause it to settle down at the base of the glass. With the mud congealed at the bottom, the water will be forced upwards, creating a clear separation between the two.

A decanter centrifuge employs the same principles of gravitational force. However, unlike the glass mixture, the process is expedited through the use of continuous rotation. In fact, rotation provides anywhere from 1000 to 4000 times the normal gravitational force, reducing the time required for separation from hours to seconds.

The concept of rotational separation is similar to rides found at amusement parks and county fairgrounds. In these rides, placing yourself at an angle allows you to overcome the gravitational forces induced by rotation. Similarly, a decanter centrifuge is essentially a bowl tube that rotates at an extremely high speed. The bowl tube is equipped with an internal conveyor which moves in the same direction but at a different velocity.

Step 1: The slurry is inserted into the centrifuge through a connecting pipe and onto a conveyor.

Step 2: Utilizing an internal feed compartment, the conveyor ushers the slurry through a nozzle into the bowl area.

Step 3: The bowl rotates at high speeds to induce gravitational forces.

Step 4: High speed rotation separates the solid material from the liquid in a matter of seconds.

Step 5: The conveyor delivers the solid material upwards where it is discharged through a nozzle.

Step 6: The solid material removed, the purified liquid is released from a separate output.

Kosun manufacture the top technology of decanter centrifuge, Hi G dryer shaker, and vertical cuttings dryer.

3 Phase Decanter Centrifuge in Oil Recovery Unit

3 Phase Decanter Centrifuge(Three-phase Decanter Centrifuge) is also called Tri-canter centrifuge, it is commonly used in oil drilling work to separate the oil rate from drilling solids, it belongs decanter centrifuge series. In Oil Recovery Unit project, 3 Phase Decanter Centrifuge is the core solid control equipment in the whole system. Today we will share more information about 3 Phase Decanter Centrifuge.

3 Phase Decanter Centrifuge

Just as we all know that decanter centrifuge is the main equipment for a whole solid control system, even in the drilling waste management unit, we also need a VFD decanter centrifuge (of course, cutting dryer is also the core part one on drilling waste management, while mud cleaner is the important equipment in solid control system), both system should be worked with drilling mud tank, that is to say, the whole equipment should be mounted in the mud tank. 3 Phase Decanter Centrifuge is the core one for the whole oil recovery unit.

You will find necessary information about oil recovery unit in last post. We did not mention the 3 Phase Decanter Centrifuge in that post. In our design, 3 Phase Decanter Centrifuge is a kind of solid control equipment used to separate the mud, water and oil from the drilling solids. Comparing with traditional decanter centrifuge, the most important function of the three-phase decanter centrifuge is that it could separate the oil from the drilling solids, while the traditional one just could separate the mud and water.

Generally speaking, 3 Phase Decanter Centrifuge is always used in huge solid control system or the system like Oil Recovery Unit. The common feature of these units is they are huge and complicated. At the same time, because of the high technology needs and heavy difficult for design and manufacture, 3 Phase Decanter Centrifuge is the one with blooming and splendid.

Why decanter centrifuge is indispensable in drilling operation?

Before hydrocyclones (desanders and desilters) and decanter centrifuge became available for drilling applications, shale shakers and dilution were the only means of solids control of drilling fluids. Consequently, solids too fine to be separated by the shaker screens in use could be controlled only by dilution which was a costly procedure that generated large quantities of excess drilling fluid. Decanter centrifuge was designed to remove the fine cut and at the same time reduce the drilling cost.

The work principle of decanter centrifuge:Centrifuges, like shale shakers and hydrocyclones, are solids control equipment, It achieves the separation goal by dividing the fluid into highdensity and lowdensity streams to separate one from the other. The processing is achieved by accelerated sedimentation. As the drilling fluid passing through a rapidly rotating bowl, centrifugal force moves the heavier particles to the bowl wall, where they are scraped toward the underflow discharge ports by a concentric auger, also called a scroll or conveyor, which rotates at a slightly slower rate than the bowl. The separation of the heavier particles divides the processed fluid into two streams: the heavy phase, also called the underflow or cake; and the lighter phase, which is called the overflow, light slurry or centrate. The heavy phase will be discarded while the lighter one will be returned to the mud tank to be further treated. The removal of these solids in order to control rheology and filter cake quality is the primary reason for centrifuging weighted drilling fluids. When the finest solids are not removed, the only alternative means of reducing their concentration is dilution, always an expensive process.
