A decanter centrifuge is a very useful equipment for any drilling site. A decanter centrifuge is basically used to dilute the fluid that is extracted from the gas or oil mine. Generally, the liquid that is extracted from a mine is of highly concentrated and coagulated. So, extracting minerals from them is practically impossible. In order to thin up the extracted fluids, a decanter centrifuge is used. By using the rotational speed of a decanter centrifuge, the highly concentrated are turned into minerals extractable thin liquid.
There are three basic designs of decanter centrifuges. The first one is vertically oriented decanter centrifuge, the second one is horizontally oriented decanter centrifuge and finally the third one is conveyor or scroll decanter centrifuge. In the vertically oriented decanter centrifuges, the fluids or solids are gathered vertically.
Vertical decanter centrifuge is very effective for high temperature and high pressure work. A horizontally oriented decanter centrifuge gathers the fluids or solids generated from high rotation in horizontal orientation. A horizontally oriented decanter is very effective for high pressure works as it provides a strong organization due to its horizontal orientation. Lastly, a conveyor or scroll centrifuge is basically a rotating machine inside a bowl.
The operating and maintaining process of a decanter centrifuge:
The first thing that should be done to maintain a decanter centrifuge is to replace any hydraulic suction filter and replace hydraulic returns filter. It is a very important step for the oil and gas drillers. As when the oil or gas drilling goes on both the hydraulic suction filter and the hydraulic returns filter undergo an extensive pressure. So, there is a huge possibility of both of them to be worn out. So in that sense, both of the filters must be checked regularly and be replaced when it is necessary.
Another important thing that is required to do in order to maintain a decanter centrifuge is greasing the machine. It is very important. As decanter centrifuge is basically used in a heavy working areas, the machine can easily be stuck or jammed off. In order to avoid that, greasing is very important. Oil lubricated gear box greasing and recirculating oil greasing are two very effective methods for greasing. A very significant task for managing a decanter centrifuge is adjusting speed sensor to it. It is very important just because adjusting a speed sensor enables drillers to control the differential speed.

The Operation of a Decanter Centrifuge
The operation of a decanter centrifuge can be either batch or continuous and is not altogether dissimilar to other types of centrifuges. A metal or plastic cylinder fixed along a central axis houses the materials or solutions to be sorted. When a motor engages the axis perpendicular to this, it creates a rotational movement capable of creating gravitational pulls up to twenty thousand times that of normal gravity. This causes larger particles to separate out first in a radial direction allowing them to move toward the bottom of the cylinder while lighter materials move toward the top.
In some decanter centrifuges a mesh is used to collect solids with liquids passing through to the outer area of the cylinder before being drained. In other models a helical extraction screw directs solids to one end and liquids to the other. If high enough acceleration is reached, the solids may even become compressed for easy removal. Both new and used centrifuges are available to purchase. As adjustable and fixed acceleration models are widely available, it is important to consider the parameters of a specific application before purchasing a decanter centrifuge. Capacity should also be considered with regard to the intended use as should the design and material construct of a decanter centrifuge as these materials must be compatible with both process liquids and solids to be sorted.
Decanter centrifuges utilize centrifugal force to speed the dewatering or thickening of slurries and suspensions in many industrial and commercial applications. While these centrifuges, like others, may also be used to separate liquids from liquids, they are more applicable in situations that require the separation of liquids from appreciable amounts of suspended solids.
Food and beverage, water treatment, oil, gas and pharmaceutical industries commonly employ decanter centrifuges for the classification of solids based on the sedimentation principle as well as the clarification of fluids resulting from the settling out of debris. Other industrial uses for decantation include solids recovery which enables many manufacturing facilities to recover and reuse valuable materials that would otherwise be disposed of along with wastewater.
While gravity alone is sometimes used, decanter centrifuges are essential in applications where the density difference of elements within a heterogeneous mixture is too small or the particles themselves are too small. Whereas normal gravity could take ages to sort these materials, the centrifugal force generated by industrial centrifuges speeds the process while producing drier solids. Dryness is important as both dewatering and drying materials helps to provide raw or processed substances that are lighter in weight than their immersed counterparts making for easier handling and lower transportation costs.

Why decanter centrifuge is indispensable in drilling operation?
Before hydrocyclones (desanders and desilters) and decanter centrifuge became available for drilling applications, shale shakers and dilution were the only means of solids control of drilling fluids. Consequently, solids too fine to be separated by the shaker screens in use could be controlled only by dilution which was a costly procedure that generated large quantities of excess drilling fluid. Decanter centrifuge was designed to remove the fine cut and at the same time reduce the drilling cost.
The work principle of decanter centrifuge:Centrifuges, like shale shakers and hydrocyclones, are solids control equipment, It achieves the separation goal by dividing the fluid into highdensity and lowdensity streams to separate one from the other. The processing is achieved by accelerated sedimentation. As the drilling fluid passing through a rapidly rotating bowl, centrifugal force moves the heavier particles to the bowl wall, where they are scraped toward the underflow discharge ports by a concentric auger, also called a scroll or conveyor, which rotates at a slightly slower rate than the bowl. The separation of the heavier particles divides the processed fluid into two streams: the heavy phase, also called the underflow or cake; and the lighter phase, which is called the overflow, light slurry or centrate. The heavy phase will be discarded while the lighter one will be returned to the mud tank to be further treated. The removal of these solids in order to control rheology and filter cake quality is the primary reason for centrifuging weighted drilling fluids. When the finest solids are not removed, the only alternative means of reducing their concentration is dilution, always an expensive process.

Brief description of Decanter Centrifuge
A decanter centrifuge is a device that can create a very fast rotation. A decanter centrifuge is basically used to dilute the fluid that is extracted from the gas or oil mine. By using the rotational speed of a decanter centrifuge, the highly concentrated are turned into minerals extractable thin liquid. There are three basic designs of decanter centrifuges.

How does a decanter centrifuge work?
As it is mentioned before the process of a decanter centrifuge is a bit complex. Usually, a decanter centrifuge depends on sedimentation, differential speed and G force to perform its job. The sedimentation rate is an important feature for the centrifugal process. If the G force or centrifugal force is very high, the separation process becomes very easy and effective. The size and shape of particles and their level of concentration determine the sedimentation rate of any decanter centrifuge. The sedimentation rate also depends on the centrifugal force.
Another important issue for the functionality of a decanter centrifuge is the differential speeds. In a centrifuge two different parts rotate simultaneously. The first part that rotates is the exterior bowl and the second part that rotates is scroll conveyor. Sedimentation is gathered in the centrifugal cylinder as the result of varying speed of the two above mentioned separate parts. If the differential speed of a decanter centrifuge is too high, a little time is required to loosen up the concentration of waste fluids. So, it is very important to keep the differential speed of a decanter centrifuge minimal. Thus, a decanter centrifuge operates its functionalities. (Editor:Kosun Lily.Wang)
Features of KOSUN Decanter Centrifuge for sale
Solids control equipment decanter centrifuge is one stage of solids control system.Normally solid control system is consist of five stages, including mud tank, shale shaker, vacuum degasser, desander, desilter, decanter centrifuge. Shale shaker is used to separate the big solids with diameter above 75μm, and 45~74μm for desander, and 15~44μm for desilter. Sometimes desander & desilter are combined as Hi-volume mud cleaner. When air enters into the drilling fluids, vacuum degasser is used to separate the air. If no air in the mud, the degasser would work as a big agitator. All these equipments are mounted on the top of the mud tank. Decanter centrifuge is used in separating suspension of solid phase with particle diameter d>=2um for drilling mud and fluids handing. After separating the solids, the mud would be pumped into the borehole again.

Introduction of the Main Equipment for Solid Control System
Recent years, with the requirement of high working efficiency in drilling industry, a new system has been designed and developed in some big solid control manufacturer, and the system is called “solid control system”. Kosun as the leading original manufacturer of solid control equipment and drilling waste management unit, the “solid control system” is not a problem for us.How to understand solid control system? As the professional solid control system manufacturer, we have our own understanding about this system.
Introduction of the Main Equipment for Solid Control System:
The first main equipment for solid control system should be the vacuum degasser,We could analytics from the function of vacuum degasser. Generally speaking, horizontal vacuum degasser will be used to separate the gas from the drilling solids. What’s the reason to do like that? Because we should do everything to prevent any dangerous elements in oil & gas drilling fields. That’s why we should put the vacuum degasser as the first role.
The second one should be mud cleaner. KOSUN MD Series Mud Cleaner is the second stage separation equipment for drilling fluids, which deals with the mud being treated by the first grade separation equipment. The barite will be recovered and cuttings which are bigger than barite will be removed. Then the barite in the underflow will flow into circulation tanks through the screens when the weighted mud passes while the particles that are bigger than mesh will be removed.
The third equipment, we think it should be shale shaker (with necessary steel frame shaker screen). Actually, after the drilling solids have been transported and fed into vacuum degasser and mud cleaner, the third step is going with shale shaker. Commonly, we still need to be transported the solids onto the shale shaker, or we could say onto the surface of shaker screen. The equipment of transporting we should use is centrifugal sand pump or screw pump; and we may use shear pump to cut the drilling solids into small one if they are in big size. With the different design of the shaker screen’s mesh, we could get the drilling solids separated in different sizes.
The fourth equipment should be the decanter centrifuge. KOSUN DC Series Decanter Centrifuge is used to separate suspended solids ≥2μm in diameter and treat the drilling mud and fluids. It is especially effective when used in oilfield service industry, industrial service industry and especially in environmentally sensitive areas. This type of centrifuge is high in recovery rate, effective in solids control and remarkable in the reduction of cost spent on drilling mud resupplying and management. It is a very sophisticated dynamic balancing machine, able to operate stably with the whirling speed ranging from 0 to 3900 and generate centrifugal force of 3000G. In solid control system, decanter centrifuge has been popularly used, which is also the popular one for drilling waste management. In this step, we could not only get the result of separating, but also we could separate the oil from the drilling solids, even if the oil is just a little part.
Of course, the whole equipment must be mounted on the top of drilling mud tank, which is a kind of basic equipment for both solid control system and drilling waste management (vertical cutting dryer is the core equipment for this system), but it is a kind of powerful equipment.
KOSUN was founded in Xi’an China in 1992. Up to now, KOSUN has formed a strategic layout integrating three centers and two industries. The Production, R&D and Domestic Sales Center is located in Xi’an China, the Overseas Project Management Center and International Trade Center in Beijing China and the Oilfield Services and Oilfield Engineering Center in Aktobe Kazakhstan in Central Asia. The two industries are traditional oil drilling solids control equipment manufacturing industry and integrated oil & gas drilling waste management service industry respectively.(Editor:Kosun Lily.Wang)

How to work Drilling Decanter Centrifuge?
Drilling Decanter Centrifuge
Drilling Decanter Centrifuge operates on the principle of centrifugal force. It is based on separation of material via buoyancy. The centrifugal force is applied for accelerated settling of solids by increasing g-force.
So a lot of components get covered in the working of a decanter centrifuge – g-force, accelerated centrifugal force, viscosity of fluid in which solids are submerged, speed of conveyers, density of different matters, feed rate, etc.
Drilling Decanter Centrifuge applied in solid control system of an oilfield drilling operation would typically be the last phase equipment in the process. The equipment will create high degree centrifugal force in the bowl to separate drilling fluid from the drilling waste .
The centrifugal force created by the centrifuge will contribute in this separation and the solid thus obtained will be carried through a conveyer that’s running at a different speed than the bowl, for further discharge. The g-force applied to the bowl will be anywhere between 1000 Gs to 4000 Gs.
The material to be filtered will be fed to the decanter centrifuge at a certain rate or speed, the bowl in which they are carried, will be set to rotate at a certain rate and inside the bowl, the conveyer will be running at different/slower speed to carry of the solids.
The rotations will generate centrifugal force inside the bowl that will force the drilling cutting to settle out and the fluid or mud will be collected in the center of the bowl for discharge.
As we know the actual output will greatly vary depending upon the earlier mentioned aspects, different designs and types will use different dimensions. The size of the decanter or the diameter, rotation per minute, limit of g-force, density of material, rate of feeding the material, and the differential speed of conveyer to carry separated solid for discharge.
All of these factors could be manipulated to achieve the desired output from the decanter centrifuge equipment. Another factor is for how long the material was stored or kept inside the bowl.
